What is mindful language, and how can it be used to honor the diverse identities of every person and make them feel valued and included in conversations? Mindful language is using intentional and unbiased word selection that acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people and promotes equitable opportunities. The words we use are critical when navigating sensitive topics involving race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. This session serves as a reminder that intentional, inclusive language requires us to pause and examine our unconscious biases and linguistic customs so we can identify harmful language habits, avoid assumptions and be better communicators.

WATCH ON-DEMAND: How Social Determinants Impact Our Mental Health
Social determinants — conditions in the environments where you were born, live, learn, work, play and worship — can impact your health, well-being and quality of life. Therefore, if you’re not in an environment where you can flourish, you might be limited, in danger or at a disadvantage. In this session, we will discuss how the following three social determinants are particularly significant when it comes to mental health: freedom from discrimination and violence, social inclusion and access to economic resources. We all play a role in addressing these determinants and empowering communities by investing in the right resources, infrastructure and partnerships to reduce health disparities. Together, we can help others enjoy their lives and improve the state of their mental health.
